Travel Insurance Plans’ Travel Delay & Missed Connection Coverages

Prior to the April 14, 2010 eruption of the Iceland Volcano Eyjafjallajokull, Travel Delay & Missed Connection coverages were straight-forward. Its periodic eruptions and resulting ash clouds that lead to airport closures & flight delays can be a learning experience for you. Hopefully, this page will help you before you need to use your trip insurance plan.

You can click here for the latest Volcano coverage info

Travel Delays & Missed Connections can come from many events, not just due to a volcano. You can have any number of Inclement Weather events as well as unexpected illnesses or injuries.

Q. How does Travel Delay work?

A. Travel Delay is reimbursement for meals and accommodations that you might incur if your trip’s departure or your return home is delayed for a covered reason (you’re still in the hospital after the cement truck incident or an unexpected ash cloud from Eyjafjallajokull cancels your flight and you have to suffer through another night in Venice.

You’ll be reimbursed up to the daily limit for meals and accommodations (to the policy maximum) if your departure is delayed for more than the number of hours required for a covered reason during your trip.

Travel Delays can turn into a trip cancellation if you are delayed at least 50% of the length of your trip’s duration. This is a bigger benefit on shorter trip lengths.

Q. How does Missed Connection work?

A. Some plans cover the additional traveling expenses under a separate section called “Missed Connection”. “Missed Connection” provides reimbursement in the event of a missed flight connection to pay the airline’s change fee costs or for the additional costs to “catch up” to a cruise or tour if the cause of delay is an accident or bad weather. I suggest you read the policy wording carefully since the phrase “Missed Connection” doesn’t mean the same from company to company.

Important: “Missed Connection” doesn’t mean the insurance will cover you in all situations. If you are going on a cruise or tour (depending on the plan) and miss its departure because you were up late partying, you will not be reimbursed.

Here’s What Each of Our Plans Cover:

Travelex Basic:

(b) any delay by a traffic accident en route to a departure, in which You or a Traveling Companion is not directly involved;
